  • Award of the Order of the Rising Sun Recognises His Contributions to Diplomacy, Cultural Exchange and People-to-People Ties

ISLAMABAD, November 3, 2026: The Government of Japan has conferred the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, upon H.E. Mr. Farukh Amil, former Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Japan, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting enduring friendship between Japan and Pakistan.

The honour was announced as part of Japan’s 2026 Fall Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, recognising Mr. Amil’s distinguished diplomatic service and sustained efforts to deepen mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.

His recognition reflects the importance Japan attaches to people-to-people engagement, cultural diplomacy and the role of dedicated diplomats in building lasting international partnerships.

A Distinguished Diplomatic Tenure in Japan

Mr. Farukh Amil served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017, a period during which he worked actively to strengthen bilateral engagement across cultural, educational and people-to-people sectors.

During his tenure, he promoted closer interaction between Pakistani and Japanese institutions, encouraged cultural exchanges and sought to deepen understanding between the two societies.

One of the notable highlights of his diplomatic engagement came in August 2015, when he invited Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado to a calligraphy exhibition at the Embassy of Pakistan in Japan. The occasion served as a meaningful symbol of cultural friendship and helped strengthen connections with Japan’s Imperial Family.

Mr. Amil also delivered lectures at more than 50 universities across Japan, engaging directly with students, academics and researchers. Through these interactions, he introduced Japanese audiences to Pakistan’s history, culture and perspectives while encouraging dialogue and mutual understanding among younger generations.

His university engagements demonstrated how educational diplomacy can complement traditional diplomatic channels and build a strong foundation for long-term bilateral cooperation.

Standing with Fukushima: A Lasting Gesture of Solidarity

Beyond formal diplomatic responsibilities, Mr. Amil’s engagement with the Japanese people reflected a strong commitment to human solidarity and compassion.

Shortly after arriving in Japan to assume his responsibilities as ambassador, he visited Fukushima Prefecture, which had suffered devastating consequences from the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

The visit took place before he presented his credentials, making his decision to travel to the affected region a particularly notable gesture of support for local communities still recovering from the disaster.

Residents expressed deep appreciation for his presence, describing the visit as an unforgettable expression of solidarity. His gesture left a lasting impression and demonstrated that diplomatic friendship extends beyond official meetings to include empathy, understanding and support during difficult times.

The visit remains a meaningful example of the human dimension of Pakistan-Japan relations, highlighting the value of compassion in strengthening ties between nations.

Continuing to Promote Japan Beyond His Ambassadorship

Mr. Amil’s commitment to strengthening understanding of Japan continued after the completion of his diplomatic assignment in 2017.

In February 2025, he co-hosted a photographic exhibition titled “Beautiful Japan – Through the Eyes of an Ambassador” with the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan.

The exhibition showcased photographs he had taken during his tenure in Japan, offering Pakistani audiences a personal perspective on the country’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and distinctive character.

The initiative provided another platform for cultural diplomacy, enabling visitors to appreciate Japan through the experiences of a former ambassador who had developed close connections with its people and institutions.

The exhibition also attracted significant media attention, receiving coverage in 14 major newspapers in Pakistan and extending its message of friendship to a wider audience.

A Recognition of Friendship and Cultural Diplomacy

Japan’s decision to honour Mr. Farukh Amil underscores the important role of diplomatic leadership in nurturing international partnerships that endure beyond individual assignments.

His contributions through cultural initiatives, university lectures, engagement with local communities and continued public outreach illustrate how sustained personal commitment can strengthen mutual respect between countries.

For Pakistan and Japan, the honour represents an encouraging reminder of the depth and breadth of their longstanding friendship. Beyond government-to-government cooperation, their relationship is enriched by educational links, cultural exchanges, shared experiences and people-to-people connections.

As both countries continue to explore opportunities for closer cooperation, the recognition of Mr. Amil’s service highlights the enduring value of diplomacy that brings societies closer together.

The decoration is not only a tribute to a distinguished Pakistani diplomat but also a celebration of the friendship between Pakistan and Japan—one built on mutual respect, cultural understanding and a shared commitment to stronger ties between their peoples.
