- Backs UN Resolution 2797 and Autonomy Plan as the Only Viable Solution
The Gabonese Republic on Tuesday reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, welcoming the historic adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
During an official meeting in Rabat, Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in charge of Integration and the Diaspora, Marie-Edith Tassyla-Ye-Doumbeneny, reiterated her country’s firm position during talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. The visit, described as both friendly and strategic, underscored the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
In a joint communiqué issued following the meeting, the Gabonese minister praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, describing it as a landmark development that reinforces Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the sole credible, serious, and sustainable framework for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.
She reaffirmed Gabon’s full backing of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, emphasizing that it remains the only realistic pathway toward a lasting political solution under Moroccan sovereignty.
The minister also highlighted Gabon’s decision to open a Consulate General in Laâyoune in January 2020, noting that this step reflects the growing international recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity and serves as tangible proof of the strong and strategic partnership between Rabat and Libreville.
Gabon’s position aligns with the broader international momentum led by Mohammed VI, aimed at consolidating global support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and advancing the autonomy plan as the definitive solution to the longstanding regional issue.
