SAN JOSE: One person was killed and another sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting on Sunday near a popular entertainment district in San Jose, California, that has served as a World Cup fan zone during the tournament, authorities said.

Police confirmed that no World Cup matches were being screened at the time of the incident. The day’s only tournament fixture had concluded at approximately 2 p.m. local time (2100 GMT).

“One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the San Jose Police Department said in a statement posted on social media platform X.

Officials added that the case is being treated as a homicide investigation and that several streets surrounding the area have been closed as detectives continue their work.

Shooting Occurred at Popular Gathering Spot

The incident took place at San Pedro Square, a well-known destination in downtown San Jose and one of several venues across the San Francisco Bay Area that have hosted large World Cup watch parties on giant screens throughout the tournament.

The Bay Area has already staged five World Cup matches, with its most recent fixture being Wednesday’s knockout clash between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States.

Heavy Police Presence at the Scene

A Reuters journalist at the scene reported a significant law enforcement presence, with numerous police vehicles surrounding the area. Emergency personnel were seen transporting an individual on a stretcher, partially covered by a white sheet, away from the scene.

Authorities cordoned off the area following the shooting, and most nearby bars and businesses closed as the investigation unfolded.

Witness Describes Chaotic Aftermath

A security guard, who declined to be identified because she was not authorized to speak to the media, said she witnessed the injured victim shortly after the incident.

“The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back,” she said. “Police were talking to security personnel and a couple of witnesses.”

The San Francisco Bay Area currently hosts several dozen official and unofficial World Cup fan zones, attracting thousands of supporters during the tournament.
