- Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen says proposal offers a credible framework for a mutually agreed solution
COPENHAGEN: Denmark has welcomed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara, describing it as a credible and constructive basis for reaching a mutually agreed political settlement to the long-running dispute.
The position was expressed by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen during a press statement on Friday following talks in Copenhagen with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
Denmark Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution
Rasmussen said Denmark welcomed, in line with the European Union’s position, the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, underscoring Copenhagen’s support for the ongoing UN-led political process.
The Danish foreign minister also described Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “credible”, saying it makes a “serious and essential contribution” to the UN process aimed at resolving the dispute.
He further characterized the initiative as a “good basis for a mutually agreed solution by all parties.”
Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty
Denmark’s position, coming from a member of the UN Security Council, reflects growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative and its efforts to secure a political settlement to the Sahara issue.
The statement also reinforces the international momentum surrounding Morocco’s position under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, particularly in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and its autonomy plan.
Copenhagen’s reaffirmation is expected to further strengthen Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to promote the autonomy initiative as the basis for a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
