BEIJING: China’s top diplomat has urged Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and play a constructive role in addressing issues related to the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to Chinese state media on Wednesday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday, state news agency Xinhua reported.

China Backs Pakistan’s Mediation Role

Wang stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement and regional stability, calling on Pakistan to “step up mediation efforts” and contribute toward the “proper handling” of matters concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial global energy shipping route.

“China will continue to support Pakistan’s mediation efforts and make its own contribution toward this end,” Wang said, according to Xinhua.

Trump Expected in Beijing for High-Level Talks

The development comes as US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China remains one of Iran’s most significant strategic and economic partners.

Pakistan Emerging as Key Diplomatic Bridge

Pakistan has increasingly emerged as a key diplomatic intermediary between Washington and Tehran amid ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a peace agreement following recent tensions and conflict in the region.

However, diplomatic efforts continue to face challenges. The Iranian government on Tuesday rejected suggestions of revising its proposals, which President Trump reportedly described as “garbage.”

The latest diplomatic engagement underscores growing international efforts to prevent further escalation and maintain stability in the Gulf region.
