Trump–Zelensky Relations Near Breaking Point as Ukraine Faces Uncertainty over US Support

NEW YORK — Relations between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appear to be approaching a critical breaking point, raising fresh concerns about the future of Washington’s military and intelligence support for Kyiv, according to The New York Times.

The newspaper reported that Trump has long expressed disdain for Zelensky, although the Ukrainian leader had previously managed to maintain a degree of American support. The relationship, however, now appears increasingly strained, with the prospect of a serious rupture becoming more pronounced ahead of the US congressional midterm elections.

Potential Suspension of US Military Assistance Raises Alarm in Kyiv

According to The New York Times, one of the most serious scenarios for Ukraine would be a decision by Washington to suspend all military assistance.

Ukraine remains dependent on critical American capabilities, including satellite communications provided through Starshield and intelligence support from the United States. Any significant reduction in these capabilities could create additional challenges for Kyiv as it continues its conflict with Russia.

The uncertainty surrounding the future of US assistance has therefore become a major concern for Ukraine, particularly as disagreements between the two presidents deepen.

Dispute over Strikes on Russian Oil Infrastructure Fuels Tensions

According to The Wall Street Journal, relations between Trump and Zelensky began deteriorating further following their meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September.

During the meeting, Trump reportedly demanded an explanation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. The newspaper reported that Washington had subsequently asked Kyiv on six occasions to halt such attacks, while the US president’s attitude towards Zelensky continued to harden.

The disagreement has added another layer of tension to an already difficult relationship, highlighting differences between Washington and Kyiv over military strategy and the management of the conflict.

Trump Questions Zelensky’s Leadership and Calls for Elections

On October 10, Trump criticised Zelensky amid the Ukrainian president’s objections to an agreement between Moscow and Washington concerning supplies of Russian diesel.

Trump also argued that Ukraine should hold elections and expressed his view that Zelensky could have brought the conflict with Russia to an end on several previous occasions but had chosen not to do so.

Zelensky rejected the prospect of holding elections under the circumstances and warned that Kyiv risked losing an important partner in Washington.

The exchange further exposed the growing political divide between the two leaders and intensified questions about the durability of the US–Ukraine partnership.

Ukraine Faces a Critical Moment in Relations with Washington

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s latest statements reflected a deterioration in relations with Zelensky to their lowest point since the previous winter.

With disagreements over military operations, political leadership and the future direction of the conflict continuing to mount, the relationship between Washington and Kyiv faces a consequential test.

For Ukraine, the stakes extend beyond diplomatic tensions. Continued access to American military assistance, intelligence and satellite communications remains strategically important, making the future course of US policy a key factor in Kyiv’s calculations.

The coming months could prove decisive in determining whether the two leaders can restore working relations or whether their growing differences will lead to a substantial reassessment of American support for Ukraine.
