- Iranian President Says Escalating Economic, Political and Military Pressure Is Deepening Global Uncertainty
NEW DELHI: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that pressure exerted on Iran by the United States has reached a “critical and dangerous stage,” arguing that the continued use of economic and political pressure is contributing to growing instability and uncertainty around the world.
Speaking in India ahead of a BRICS summit, Pezeshkian said the international community was confronting what he described as “a period of unprecedented complexity”, cautioning that the increasing use of economic instruments as a means of exerting pressure was further aggravating the situation.
“Iran has been subjected to heavy sanctions in recent years; this pressure has reached a critical and dangerous stage in recent months following the military aggression by the United States and Israel,” he said.
Tehran Highlights Impact of Sanctions and Military Escalation
Pezeshkian’s remarks come against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Iran’s economy has faced extensive international sanctions for decades, while recent military confrontation has added further pressure to the country’s economic and security environment.
Iran subsequently retaliated by restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways for energy transportation, contributing to a sharp rise in global energy prices.
The Iranian president warned that the consequences of pressure against a major regional economy could extend well beyond Iran’s borders.
“When a country is subjected to political and military pressure on its trade, energy, infrastructure and financial system, the repercussions extend beyond its borders,” Pezeshkian said.
Iran Seeks Stronger Engagement Through BRICS
Pezeshkian is making his first official visit to India, where his participation in the BRICS summit comes amid growing efforts by Iran to strengthen economic and diplomatic relations with major emerging economies.
His visit also reflects Tehran’s emphasis on expanding cooperation with non-Western partners as it confronts continuing sanctions and geopolitical pressure.
According to Indian diplomatic sources, Pezeshkian was scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Friday.
The discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to address bilateral relations as well as broader regional and international developments.
