MOSCOW: US envoys held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday on what the White House described as “substantive plans” for the next steps toward ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump’s business associate Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner met Putin as part of Washington’s diplomatic efforts to advance negotiations aimed at bringing an end to the conflict.

According to a White House official quoted by AFP, the two US representatives discussed “substantive plans for next steps,” with further details expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The White House official said Witkoff and Kushner also expressed their expectation of holding similarly productive discussions in Ukraine on Sunday.

The meetings form part of intensified US diplomatic efforts to explore a potential pathway toward ending the war, which has continued since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

No further details were immediately provided on the substance of the proposals discussed with Putin or the timeline for any potential agreement.
