- At Least 14 Killed in Cross-Border Attacks Amid Escalating Drone and Missile Campaigns
KYIV: Russia and Ukraine exchanged another wave of deadly attacks on Sunday, leaving at least 14 people dead across both countries as the nearly four-and-a-half-year conflict continued to intensify despite stalled diplomatic efforts.
According to officials, Ukrainian strikes killed at least nine people in Russia, while Russian missile, drone and aerial bomb attacks claimed at least five lives in Ukraine. The latest escalation underscores the growing intensity of cross-border operations by both sides.
Russia Reports Multiple Civilian Deaths
In Russia’s Belgorod region, a Ukrainian strike near a playground killed four people, including a 13-year-old girl, according to Acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev. He said doctors were unable to save the teenager due to the severity of her injuries.
Russia’s Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of terrorism targeting civilians.
In the Saratov region, two people were killed after a Ukrainian drone struck a residential building in the city of Engels, home to a major Russian military airbase.
Ukraine’s military confirmed it had targeted the Engels airbase, an oil refinery in Saratov, and an oil depot in Russia’s Kaluga region, saying the strikes triggered large fires at the facilities.
A separate Ukrainian drone attack on a vehicle in Russia’s Udmurtia region, more than 1,000 kilometres from the front line, killed three people. Regional Governor Olga Abramova said the victims were civilians and had no connection to military operations.
Hundreds of Ukrainian Drones Intercepted
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones overnight, one of the largest reported drone assaults of the war.
Among the facilities hit was a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, in the Samara region, about 800 kilometres from Ukraine. Regional authorities said no casualties were reported and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.
Ukrainian forces have reportedly targeted around a dozen Wildberries facilities since mid-July as part of efforts to disrupt Russia’s logistics and commercial infrastructure.
In Bashkortostan, regional Governor Radiy Khabirov said air defences repelled a large-scale drone attack on industrial facilities, although one drone struck an industrial zone near the regional capital, Ufa.
Russian Attacks Continue Across Ukraine
On the Ukrainian side, Russian attacks killed two civilians in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region and one person each in the southern Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
In Zaporizhzhia city, Russian glide bombs killed one person and wounded 21 others, according to regional Governor Ivan Fedorov.
In the Kharkiv region, a Russian strike destroyed a Nova Poshta postal terminal, killing one postal worker, the company confirmed.
Russia’s Defence Ministry also said its forces struck military infrastructure at Ukraine’s southern port of Mykolaiv, including two vessels carrying military cargo, as well as another vessel operating in the Black Sea.
Civilian Casualties Continue to Rise
The United Nations has reported a sharp increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine this year, attributing the rise to Russia’s growing use of long-range missiles and drones that are difficult to intercept.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has expanded its long-range drone campaign against Russian military, energy and logistics infrastructure in an effort to increase pressure on Moscow and strengthen its position in any future negotiations.
Peace Efforts Remain Deadlocked
International efforts to broker a ceasefire remain at an impasse. US-led negotiations aimed at ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II have made little progress since February, when joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran shifted international diplomatic priorities.
Despite mounting civilian casualties, both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny deliberately targeting civilian populations.
