- Merino’s Late Winner Sets Up High-Stakes Clash Against France
WASHINGTON: Spain secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium to book their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Mikel Merino’s late strike sealing a hard-fought quarter-final triumph.
Midfielder Fabián Ruiz gave Spain the lead in the 30th minute before Belgium responded through Charles De Ketelaere, who equalized in the 41st minute to leave the contest finely balanced at halftime.
With extra time looming, Merino struck in the 88th minute to send Spain into the final four and keep alive the nation’s hopes of lifting the World Cup trophy.
Spain to Face France in Semi-finals
Spain will now take on France in a highly anticipated semi-final after the French side defeated Morocco 2-0 in their quarter-final encounter.
Speaking after the victory, Merino expressed his delight at helping Spain move within two matches of World Cup glory.
“I’m thrilled. I don’t know if an opportunity like this will come again. We’re just two matches away from winning a World Cup,” Merino told FIFA’s official website.
He added that representing Spain on football’s biggest stage was a dream come true.
“It’s a dream come true, and we hope we can make it happen. Millions of people are watching these matches, and bringing joy to them is a source of immense pride.”
Looking ahead to the semi-final, Merino acknowledged the challenge posed by France.
“At this stage of the tournament, you expect to face elite opposition. France are a top-class team, and we know it will be another difficult match.”
De la Fuente Praises Spain’s Commitment
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente praised his players for their determination and belief, describing it as a privilege to lead such a committed squad.
“This team has tremendous character. It is an honour to coach a group that is so committed and constantly striving to improve,” De la Fuente said.
The Spanish coach expressed confidence that his side could overcome France despite the magnitude of the challenge.
“It’s fair to believe we can beat France. We will prepare thoroughly and give everything. Two great teams will meet, and we look forward to another outstanding contest.”
