- Hosts Secure Historic Knockout Win, Set Up Belgium Clash in Seattle
SANTA CLARA: The United States booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, overcoming a second-half red card to secure a historic triumph on home soil.
The win marked only the Americans’ second-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match and their first in nearly 25 years, setting up a last-16 showdown with Belgium in Seattle on Monday.
Folarin Balogun opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before being sent off in the second half, but Malik Tillman’s late free-kick ensured the co-hosts progressed in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
Balogun Strikes Before Seeing Red
A festive atmosphere greeted the match at the packed Santa Clara stadium, with millions of viewers across the United States following the highly anticipated encounter.
Bosnia signaled their intentions from the outset with direct attacking play, while the Americans pushed high up the field in search of early dominance.
The visitors created the better opportunities in the opening stages. Veteran captain Edin Dzeko expertly controlled a long pass and set up Ermedin Demirovic, whose effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Matt Freese.
Freese was called into action again moments later, preventing a dangerous corner from Kerim Alajbegovic from curling directly into the net.
The United States gradually gained control, with Balogun appealing unsuccessfully for a penalty after a challenge from Amar Dedic. The striker later found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside following a precise pass from Weston McKennie.
The breakthrough finally arrived in first-half stoppage time. Captain Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnian goal kick and quickly fed Tillman, whose through ball deflected into Balogun’s path. The forward calmly finished beneath the goalkeeper to send the home supporters into celebration.
Balogun nearly doubled the advantage moments later, striking the crossbar from close range after excellent work by Tyler Adams and Sergino Dest.
Bosnia Respond as Red Card Changes the Game
Bosnia suffered an early setback in the second half when Dzeko was forced off with an injury, prompting coach Sergej Barbarez to introduce three substitutes.
The changes injected fresh energy into the Bosnian attack, with Wisconsin-born Esmir Bajraktarevic helping to increase the tempo and intensity.
The match took another dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a straight red card following a VAR review that judged him to have stamped on defender Tarik Muharemovic.
Reduced to 10 men, the United States faced sustained pressure, but Freese remained composed, denying Demirovic from a promising position.
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino used a hydration break to regroup his players, urging them to maintain their discipline and defensive organization during the closing stages.
Although Christian Pulisic briefly thought he had extended the lead, his effort was correctly ruled out for offside.
Tillman Seals Historic Victory
The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute when Sergino Dest earned a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area after being pulled back by a Bosnian defender.
Tillman produced a moment of brilliance, curling the ball over the wall and beyond the outstretched fingertips of goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to make it 2-0.
Bosnia continued to push forward during a tense period of stoppage time, with substitute Ermin Mahmic narrowly missing the target with a late effort.
The Americans, however, held firm to preserve a clean sheet and secure a memorable victory that keeps their World Cup dream alive.
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes as chants of “USA” echoed around the stadium, while fans joined in singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” to celebrate one of the most significant wins in the nation’s football history.
