TEHRAN – Iran launched retaliatory strikes against US military bases in the region after Washington carried out attacks on Iranian territory, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the elite branch of Iran’s armed forces.

“In response to the aggression, the IRGC naval forces carried out strikes against the deployment sites of the US military in the region,” the Tasnim news agency quoted the military as saying.

The IRGC did not immediately disclose the locations or extent of the strikes.

The development came after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had conducted military operations against targets inside Iran in response to an attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

US officials said the action was intended as a retaliatory measure following the incident involving maritime traffic in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.

The latest exchange of strikes has further heightened tensions in the region, raising concerns about the stability of a fragile ceasefire and the future of ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
