BANGKOK: Thailand is mourning the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who passed away at the age of 47 after a prolonged illness.

The Bureau of the Royal Household confirmed that the princess died on Thursday evening at a Bangkok hospital, where she had been receiving medical care since she fell unconscious in December 2022.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described her death as a profound national tragedy, saying the princess was “a pride of Thailand” and that her dedication to justice, equality, and social welfare would remain a lasting legacy for future generations.

Mourners gathered at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, where the princess had been treated, carrying photographs and offering emotional tributes.

Pattamaporn Kaewkityakorn, one of those who came to show support, said she had hoped for a miracle despite the princess’s long illness.

“I know she was sick, but I wished there were a miracle,” she said, expressing her shock and sadness following the announcement of the princess’s passing.

A Life Dedicated to Justice and Humanitarian Work

Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely recognized for her work in criminal justice reform, particularly through her Kamlangjai (“Inspire”) Project, which focused on supporting and rehabilitating incarcerated Thai women before their release.

She also played a key role in efforts to improve prison conditions for women and combat violence against women. Her advocacy contributed to the adoption of the United Nations’ “Bangkok Rules” on the treatment of female prisoners.

In 2017, she was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, further highlighting her international contributions to justice and human rights.

Medical Condition and Final Years

The princess was hospitalized in December 2022 after collapsing while training dogs for an army exhibition. The palace later announced that she had suffered from a mycoplasma infection, a bacterial illness commonly linked to pneumonia.

Her prolonged condition drew widespread public concern, with many Thais continuing to hope for her recovery.

Distinguished Academic and Diplomatic Career

Born on December 7, 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha studied law at Thammasat University before earning a master’s degree and doctorate in law from Cornell University in the United States.

She began her career in international diplomacy, working with Thailand’s mission to the United Nations in New York before serving as a public prosecutor. From 2012 to 2014, she represented Thailand as ambassador to Austria.

Her academic achievements and legal expertise made her one of Thailand’s most prominent royal figures involved in public service.

Legacy of Justice and Equality

Throughout her life, Princess Bajrakitiyabha emphasized the importance of law, fairness, and human dignity.

“Society cannot grow if there is instability and injustice,” she said in a 2013 interview, stressing that the rule of law was essential for development, economic progress, and human rights.

The princess is survived by her parents and siblings. Thailand continues to remember her as a symbol of compassion, service, and commitment to a more just society.
