- Civilians Killed and Injured in Multiple Regions
Ukraine on Sunday reported continued Russian drone strikes and intense frontline fighting despite a US-brokered ceasefire aimed at reducing hostilities between Kyiv and Moscow.
According to Ukrainian officials, nearly 150 battlefield clashes were recorded over the past 24 hours, while several regions across the country came under renewed drone and artillery attacks.
The temporary ceasefire, announced as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump, was scheduled to run from May 9 to May 11. The initiative was intended to support broader peace negotiations aimed at ending the war that has continued for more than four years.
Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv Regions Hit by Drone Attacks
In southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Governor Ivan Fedorov said Russian strikes killed one person and wounded three others early Sunday.
Meanwhile, authorities in the northeastern Kharkiv region reported that eight civilians, including two children, were injured in drone attacks targeting the regional capital and nearby settlements. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov described the attacks as part of continued aerial assaults despite the declared truce.
Southern Regions Also Under Fire
In southern Kherson region, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said seven people, including a child, were wounded in Russian drone and artillery strikes since Saturday morning.
Authorities in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region also confirmed injuries and infrastructure damage following additional Russian attacks. Regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said a child was among those wounded.
Ukrainian Air Defenses Intercept Drones
Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia launched 27 long-range drones overnight. Although the number was lower than previous large-scale attacks, Ukrainian air defense systems reportedly intercepted and destroyed all incoming drones.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, Ukraine’s General Staff reported 147 combat clashes along the front line over the last 24 hours, highlighting the continuing intensity of the conflict.
Fragile Ceasefire Faces Challenges
While Ukrainian authorities detailed ongoing attacks and military engagements, officials have not publicly accused Russia of formally violating the US-mediated ceasefire arrangement. The agreement was also expected to include an exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.
Earlier in the week, both Russia and Ukraine separately announced temporary ceasefires beginning on Wednesday and Friday respectively. However, both sides soon accused each other of failing to fully observe the truce, underscoring the fragile nature of ongoing peace efforts.
