DUBAI: French Moroccan actress Nadia Fares has died at the age of 57, a week after she was discovered unconscious in a swimming pool at a Paris gym.

Fares had been in a coma since the incident, which reportedly took place on April 11 at a private club in the city’s 9th arrondissement. Her daughters confirmed that she died on Friday.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Nadia Fares this Friday,” they said in a statement to AFP. “France has lost a great artist, but for us, it is above all a mother we have just lost.”

Fares was due to begin work on a new action-comedy project in September, which would have marked her debut as both a screenwriter and director.

She gained widespread recognition in 2000 with her role in “Les Rivieres Pourpres” (“The Crimson Rivers”), directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and adapted from Jean-Christophe Grange’s novel. In the film, she starred alongside Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel.

Fares went on to build an international career, appearing in productions such as the 2007 action thriller “War,” alongside Jason Statham and Jet Li, as well as the horror feature “Storm Warning.”
