Netherlands Endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Sahara, Reaffirms Strategic Partnership

Netherlands has renewed support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan,

Rabat: The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Tom Berendsen, has reaffirmed his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most viable solution to the Sahara dispute, following high-level talks in Rabat with Nasser Bourita.

Speaking at a joint press briefing, Berendsen emphasized that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most feasible solution” to the long-standing issue. His remarks were also reflected in a Joint Communiqué issued after discussions held during his official visit to Rabat on April 7–8.

Support for UN-Led Political Process

The Dutch minister reiterated his country’s backing for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 and expressed full support for the ongoing efforts led by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura.

He underlined the importance of advancing negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal to achieve a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” to the dispute.

According to the Joint Communiqué, the Netherlands will align its diplomatic and economic engagement with this position, in full respect of international law.

Morocco Praised as a Reliable Partner for Peace and Stability

Minister Berendsen commended the leadership of King Mohammed VI, describing Morocco as a “trustworthy partner and a committed player” in promoting global peace and stability.

He also lauded the King’s active role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, particularly his continued advocacy for the Palestinian cause. Additionally, the Dutch foreign minister highlighted the strong cooperation between Morocco and the Netherlands within international frameworks, including efforts to advance the Two-State Solution.

Growing Economic Opportunities and Strategic Importance

Highlighting Morocco’s rapid development, Berendsen praised the country’s modern infrastructure and expanding economic potential, noting the wide range of investment opportunities available to international partners.

In the current geopolitical landscape, he described Morocco as a strategic partner for the Netherlands, pointing to its deep connections with West Africa, the Sahel, and Gulf countries. He also acknowledged Morocco’s constructive role in fostering development and stability across the Sahel region.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

The visit underscored the growing depth of Morocco–Netherlands relations, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to enhancing diplomatic, economic, and strategic cooperation.

The evolving partnership reflects a shared vision for regional stability, sustainable development, and a rules-based international order.
