Rabat – Strengthening International Support for a Political Settlement

The Republic of Costa Rica has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as “the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In a Joint Declaration signed in Rabat following high-level talks, Costa Rica emphasized that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most feasible and pragmatic pathway toward resolving the longstanding issue.

High-Level Diplomatic Engagement

The declaration was issued after discussions between Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Arnoldo André Tinoco, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica, who is currently on an official working visit to the Kingdom.

Costa Rica further underscored its commitment to actively reflect this position across multiple fronts, including political, diplomatic, economic, and consular engagements.

Support for UN Process and Growing Momentum

The Central American nation also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), highlighting its importance in reinforcing international efforts toward a peaceful resolution.

Acknowledging Morocco’s prioritization of the Sahara issue, Costa Rica noted the “positive momentum” surrounding the process, particularly under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

Both parties reiterated their firm support for the United Nations-led political process, including the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, aimed at reaching a definitive and mutually acceptable solution.

A Step Forward in International Consensus

This latest endorsement reflects a growing international alignment behind Morocco’s autonomy plan, further consolidating diplomatic momentum in favor of a realistic, compromise-based resolution to the regional dispute.
