RABAT – Sweden has expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, considering it a credible and serious basis for negotiations aimed at achieving a definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, in light of the recently adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2797.

This position was articulated in an official statement issued by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a telephone conversation held on Monday between Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Maria Malmer Stenergard, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.

By formally endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Sweden aligns itself with the overwhelming majority of European Union member states and more than two-thirds of United Nations member countries that have expressed support for this initiative as a viable framework for resolving the dispute.

It is recalled that UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, underscores that a solution based on genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most realistic, pragmatic, and feasible path toward a lasting resolution of this regional issue.
