Islamabad – Serena Hotels, under its visionary Sports Diplomacy Initiative, proudly hosted the inaugural Portugal-Pakistan Chess Tournament on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the elegant Islamabad Serena Hotel. This exceptional event was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad and the Chess Federation of Pakistan, setting a new benchmark for cultural engagement through sport.

The tournament was a heartfelt tribute to the National Day of Portugal and a significant milestone—marking 75 years of robust diplomatic relations between Portugal and Pakistan. Designed to deepen bilateral ties through the universal appeal of chess, the event reflected Serena Hotels’ unwavering commitment to promoting cross-cultural understanding, intellectual exchange, and people-to-people connectivity.

The presence and personal engagement of H.E. Ambassador Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan, added gravitas to the event. His proactive role in fostering cultural diplomacy and his passion for uniting communities through shared traditions and games like chess were widely appreciated. His leadership exemplifies the positive trajectory of Portugal-Pakistan relations and underlines Portugal’s deep respect for Pakistan’s rich intellectual and sporting potential.

More than 40 players—ranging from rising young enthusiasts to seasoned masters—participated in the friendly yet competitive tournament. The atmosphere was intellectually vibrant and socially inclusive, drawing diplomats, members of civil society, government officials, and representatives of international organizations to witness the bridging of cultures over a chessboard.

Serena Hotels, known for championing cultural cohesion and regional harmony, once again demonstrated its pioneering role in shaping peaceful narratives. By integrating sports into its diplomatic and social outreach programs, Serena continues to foster environments where dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect flourish.
