Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warmly welcomed Qatari mountaineer Sheikha Asma Al Thani in Islamabad on Thursday, commending her extraordinary achievements in high-altitude climbing and her pivotal role in promoting Pakistan as a premier destination for adventure and mountain tourism.

Sheikha Asma, who recently became the first woman from Qatar and the Gulf region to summit Nanga Parbat — the world’s ninth-highest peak — was officially appointed as Pakistan’s brand ambassador for mountain and adventure tourism. During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz praised her courage, determination, and dedication to empowering women through the pursuit of challenging expeditions.

“Sheikha Asma Al Thani’s journey symbolizes the strong and growing friendship between Qatar and Pakistan,” the prime minister stated, adding that her successful summit of Nanga Parbat not only marked a historic milestone for Qatar but also spotlighted the breathtaking beauty of Pakistan’s mountains.

Highlighting Pakistan’s unique position as home to five of the world’s 14 highest peaks, the prime minister said, “It is a matter of national pride to see our mountain ranges being recognized and explored by such inspiring international figures.” He invited Sheikha Asma to return for future expeditions and explore even more of Pakistan’s majestic landscapes.

The prime minister also acknowledged the vital role played by Pakistani porters and guides in supporting international climbers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to their welfare and the development of the country’s adventure tourism infrastructure.

As Vice President of Qatar’s Gender Equality Commission, Sheikha Asma was lauded for her active efforts in promoting women’s empowerment through sports. Her role, the prime minister noted, aligns with broader shared goals between Qatar and Pakistan in fostering youth engagement, gender equality, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Sheikha Asma expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality she received during her climbs and paid special tribute to the local porters who contributed to her success. She recalled her summit of K2 — the second-highest peak in the world — calling it the most beautiful and challenging climb of her mountaineering career.

The visit and continued engagement of Sheikha Asma Al Thani further reinforce the deepening bonds of friendship between Qatar and Pakistan and pave the way for greater cooperation in tourism, sports, and cultural exchange.
