
Ethiopia and Pakistan Reaffirm Commitment to Deepen Economic and Cultural Ties
Karachi, Pakistan – July 2, 2025 – The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have reaffirmed their strong commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on economic collaboration, cultural exchanges, and increased connectivity between the two nations.
The significant engagement took place on Wednesday at the Chief Minister House in Karachi, where H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary of Ethiopia, met with H.E. Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Honorable Chief Minister of Sindh Province. Also in attendance was H.E. Ibrahim Khalid Tawab, the Honorary Consul of Ethiopia in Karachi.

During the high-level meeting, both sides explored avenues for deepening cooperation in key sectors including trade, investment, agriculture, agro-processing, climate change, technology, and cultural exchange. The two dignitaries emphasized the importance of enhancing people-to-people contacts and direct air connectivity, acknowledging the growing role of Ethiopian Airlines in bridging the geographical gap between the two regions.
Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula highlighted the need for increased knowledge sharing and collaboration, particularly in addressing the global threat of climate change. He presented Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, launched by Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, as a successful model of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
“Ethiopia is a role model in Africa in green economic development, setting a world record by planting over 40 billion seedlings in just six years,” said the Ambassador. “This initiative not only combats climate change but also promotes food security, job creation, and biodiversity conservation.”
He invited the Chief Minister to attend the Pakistan Single Country Exhibition scheduled to be hosted in Ethiopia in October 2025, which aims to boost trade ties and showcase Pakistan’s diverse economic sectors to Ethiopian partners.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed a keen interest in strengthening bilateral relations and conveyed his appreciation for Ethiopia’s achievements in sustainable development. He praised the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s proactive efforts in addressing climate challenges.
“Ethiopia’s accomplishments in green economic development are commendable,” the Chief Minister remarked. “We are eager to build partnerships that contribute to the prosperity of both our countries.”
The Chief Minister expressed his intent to visit Ethiopia in the near future and reaffirmed his full support in advancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Sindh Province and Ethiopia.
The meeting concluded on a note of optimism and mutual resolve to forge ahead with concrete initiatives that promote inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and deeper understanding between the peoples of Ethiopia and Pakistan.
