The statement of the Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev on the occassion of the 79th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War

Dear colleagues, Your Excellencies Ambassadors, esteemed members of the diplomatic corps of friendly countries, dear compatriots, my friends

First of all, I would like to thank you for making time to visit the Russian Embassy today and for taking part in the St. George’s Ribbon campaign and the “Immortal Regiment” march. These events honor the memory of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers, everyone who fought on the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War or provided support on the home front. Owing to our ancestors’ unparalleled feat of heroism, the Soviet Union succeeded in defending our country’s independence, broke the back of fascism and defeated the “brown plague”, albeit at the cost of tremendous sacrifice and suffering. We owe our very existence, our countries and nations’ peace and development to our ancestors. In commemoration of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the toilers of the home front, I declare a minute of silence.

Today’s celebration of Victory Day is marred by the fact that Nazism is once again rearing its ugly head. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the other day, “descendants of Napoleon and Hitler, together with the Anglo-Saxons, once again seek to deliver a strategic defeat to our country, destroy it and subjugate it to their self-serving, hegemonic interests”. They are trying to get a rematch and, for that end, they are using the blatantly Nazi regime in Ukraine, which has been nurtured for many years. And just like our forefathers did in their day, today we are witnessing our country and its people’s extraordinary enthusiasm and readiness for another Sacred Battle.

Today, amidst rampant Western propaganda, brainwashing, attempts to revise history and demolition of monuments, one of the main tasks of Russian diplomacy is to ensure that our righteous struggle is correctly perceived in the world. By carrying out this duty, we take up the mantle from our fathers and grandfathers in defending the interests of our country. Russia’s modern responsibility and mission is to consolidate the countries of the world’s majority – the Global South and the Global East, – including Pakistan. These countries realize that Russia is fighting for them as well, defending those who do not accept the West’s lopsided vision, designed solely to preserve its dominance. It is encouraging to see that despite the pressure, the Pakistani people and authorities have their own independent outlook on global developments. I had the opportunity to see this for myself the day before yesterday at a meeting with students of a Pakistani university, which organized a function to commemorate May 9.
