- Craig and Lindsay Foreman had been charged with espionage after Iran accused them of gathering information in several parts of the country
LONDON – British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper has strongly condemned the 10-year prison sentence handed to British nationals Craig and Lindsay Foreman by Iranian authorities, vowing to pursue the case relentlessly until the couple is safely returned to the UK.
Official Response
In a statement released on Thursday, Cooper described the sentence as “totally unjustifiable” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing the couple’s release.
“We will pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian government until we see Craig and Lindsay Foreman safely returned to the UK and reunited with their family,” Cooper said.
The Charges
The Foremans were charged with espionage after Iran accused them of gathering information in several parts of the country. The charges have been widely disputed by the couple’s family and UK officials, who cite a lack of evidence and due process.
Family’s Account of the Trial
Lindsay Foreman’s son, Joe Bennett, provided further details on the couple’s legal ordeal in a separate statement. He revealed that the pair appeared at a three-hour trial on October 27 of last year, during which they were reportedly not permitted to present a defense.
“We have seen no evidence to support the charge of espionage,” Bennett said. He expressed deep concern for the couple’s welfare and condemned the lack of transparency in the Iranian judicial process.
Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
The UK government has indicated that the case remains a top diplomatic priority, with officials continuing to engage with Iranian authorities to seek the couple’s release and ensure their fair treatment.
