WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had agreed to cancel a planned large-scale military strike against Iran after what he described as significant progress toward a potential agreement with Tehran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the United States had been fully prepared to launch military action against Iran.
“The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II,” Trump wrote.
According to the US president, Iran, along with several Middle Eastern countries, requested that Washington delay any military action because the framework of a possible agreement had been reached.
Trump said the proposed understanding would include the immediate, complete, and total reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as measures aimed at ending what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
He added that, in response to the request, he had agreed to suspend the planned military operation in the interest of global stability and Iran’s future prosperity.
“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” Trump stated.
No immediate response was available from Iranian officials regarding Trump’s announcement, and further details of the proposed agreement were not disclosed.
