Islamabad – The Republic of Maldives has secured membership in the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s diplomatic and technological advancement.
COPUOS serves as the UN’s primary forum for shaping international law and policy governing outer space. This membership grants the Maldives a pivotal voice in global dialogues on space governance, ensuring the peaceful and sustainable use of the cosmos.
“This achievement underscores our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge science and international cooperation for national development,” said a senior government official. “Membership in COPUOS provides a strategic platform to advocate for the application of space technology in addressing critical challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly climate change.”
The Maldives plans to actively utilize its position to enhance its capabilities in climate monitoring, maritime domain awareness, disaster management, and environmental protection through access to space-derived data and expertise. This aligns with the nation’s broader goals for sustainable development and building climate resilience.
The Maldives joins five other new member states—Honduras, Zimbabwe, Malta, The Gambia, and Côte d’Ivoire—in expanding the Committee’s membership.
