Rwanda Accelerates Digital Future as National Connectivity Project Hits 55% Completion Milestone

Rwanda’s Digital Leap: Over 1,000 Schools Connected as National Transformation Project Reaches 55% Completion

KIGALI – Rwanda is making bold strides toward a digitally empowered future, as authorities confirm that over 1,000 schools across the country are now connected to the internet—marking a major milestone in the country’s ambitious Rwanda Digital Acceleration Project (RDAP).

In a recent parliamentary briefing, Innocent Bagamba Muhizi, CEO of the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA), revealed that the $200 million initiative has achieved 55% implementation since its 2022 launch. Backed by the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, RDAP is a cornerstone of Rwanda’s vision to become a leading digital hub in Africa by 2026.

Despite some early delays, progress has been substantial. 180 schools have already received computers to support digital learning, while key public digital infrastructure is being revamped. Notable advancements include the revitalization of the Building Permit Management System and the rollout of E-Ubuzima, a cutting-edge digital health platform now operational in Kigali and two provinces, with national expansion underway.

The RDAP project focuses on four major pillars: expanding broadband access, modernizing digital public services, increasing digital inclusion in critical sectors like health and education, and nurturing Rwanda’s digital innovation ecosystem.

A flagship feature of the project is the creation of a national digital ID system, designed to streamline access to public services and facilitate secure digital transactions. A legislative framework was introduced in 2023, and the government has allocated $8.5 million for digital ID enrollment in its 2025–2026 budget.

By 2026, Rwanda aims to enhance digital access for low-income families, promote nationwide digital literacy, and strengthen cybersecurity and data protection—putting citizens at the heart of its digital revolution.

This bold transformation reflects Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to inclusive, tech-driven development and its growing reputation as one of Africa’s most innovative nations.
