KYIV: Russia launched a major overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital early Tuesday, injuring at least four people and causing significant damage to residential infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials and eyewitness accounts.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a suspected missile strike hit a 24-story apartment building, triggering a partial collapse and raising concerns that residents could be trapped beneath the rubble. Preliminary reports indicated at least four injuries.

Emergency crews were deployed across several districts of the capital as multiple fires broke out following the attack. In Kyiv’s Podil district, flames engulfed a non-residential property, while debris believed to have fallen from intercepted missiles ignited the roof of a nine-story apartment building.

“In the Obolon district, vehicles caught fire after being struck by falling missile debris,” Klitschko said in a statement on Telegram. “Additional fires were reported at two separate open-area locations, including one near a kindergarten.”

Thousands of Kyiv residents sought safety in metro stations and bomb shelters as air raid sirens echoed across the city during the night.

Zelensky Warns of Possible Large-Scale Russian Offensive

Ahead of the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated intelligence warnings of a potential large-scale Russian strike and urged citizens to remain vigilant.

“Intelligence warnings regarding Russian attacks remain active. A massive strike is possible, and preparations appear to have been made,” Zelensky said in his nightly address.

He added that Ukraine’s defense forces remain on high alert and are operating around the clock with the resources currently available.

Moscow Signals Expanded Military Campaign

The latest assault comes after Russia warned last week that it intended to conduct what it described as “systematic strikes” against Ukrainian military-related facilities and decision-making centers in Kyiv. Moscow also advised foreign nationals to leave the capital.

Russian officials said the planned operations were a response to a drone strike on a dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region last month that reportedly killed 21 people. Ukraine has denied responsibility for the incident.

Kharkiv Region Also Comes Under Fire

In northeastern Ukraine, the Kharkiv Oblast also faced overnight shelling. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that at least six people were wounded, including an 11-year-old girl.

The reported casualties and damage have not been independently verified.

War Enters Fifth Year Amid Stalled Peace Efforts

The latest escalation highlights the continuing intensity of the conflict, which has persisted for more than four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Throughout the war, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and critical facilities, while Ukraine has intensified attacks on oil and military-related sites inside Russia. Both sides maintain that they do not deliberately target civilians.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, prospects for a negotiated settlement remain limited, with internatiional attention increasingly divided by other global crises, including escalating tensions in the Middle East.
