Moscow – In an official statement, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed the deteriorating security situation on the Afghan-Pakistani border, urging both nations to pursue peaceful resolution.
The statement confirmed that Moscow is “closely monitoring with concern the reports of a significant military escalation” that occurred on October 10-11. It was noted that the engagements, which spread throughout the border area including the Pashtun tribal belt, involved aerial strikes and ground fire, leading to regrettable losses of life among the armed forces of both sides.
“The differing interpretations of the nature of the clashes and the reasons behind the escalation from Kabul and Islamabad underscore the need for clear communication,” the statement read.
While acknowledging that the situation appears to be stabilising, a development the Russian side welcomes, the Ministry issued a firm appeal for continued calm. It called upon “both parties to demonstrate maximum restraint and to resolve all existing disagreements exclusively through political and diplomatic channels.”
Reiterating Russia’s interest in regional stability, the statement expressed anticipation for “the swift resumption of a constructive bilateral dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan, two nations friendly to Russia.” Such dialogue, it was stressed, is crucial for addressing shared challenges, particularly in the spheres of counterterrorism and regional security.
