- Portugal Fully Supports Autonomy Initiative as Most Serious, Credible and Constructive Basis to Settle Moroccan Sahara Dispute
RABAT – In a significant boost to the international momentum led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Portuguese Republic has expressed its unequivocal support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara region and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, calling it “the most serious, credible, and constructive basis” to resolve the long-standing dispute.
This landmark position was reaffirmed in a Joint Statement signed in Lisbon by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
Portugal emphasized the centrality of the Sahara issue for Morocco and praised the Kingdom’s consistent and credible efforts within the United Nations framework to secure a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution. The statement also reiterated support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which calls for a realistic and pragmatic solution grounded in compromise.
With this declaration, Portugal joins a growing international coalition endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the path forward. The stance not only consolidates Portugal’s alignment with global consensus but also reflects the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.
This strong diplomatic backing stands as a testament to the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Morocco’s steadfast commitment to peace, regional stability, and international cooperation.
