Portugal-Pakistan Diplomatic Milestone: National Day Celebrations Highlight 75-Year Bond

Islamabad – Portuguese Ambassador Frederico Silva hosted a formal reception at a local hotel on Tuesday to mark Portugal’s National Day and commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations with Pakistan. The event also celebrated 886 years of Portugal’s rich historical legacy, drawing a distinguished gathering of government officials, cultural figures, and members of the diplomatic corps.

A Tribute to Portugal’s Legacy

Ambassador Silva reflected on Portugal’s storied past, noting its establishment in 1139 as an independent kingdom. “Portugal stands as a symbol of maritime exploration, global cultural exchange, and enduring democratic values,” he said. He honored Luís Vaz de Camões, Portugal’s national poet, whose epic Os Lusíadas immortalized the country’s Age of Discovery.

The ambassador also acknowledged the contributions of the five million-strong Portuguese diaspora worldwide and reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

Advocating Peace and Multilateralism

Highlighting Portugal’s active global role, Ambassador Silva reiterated its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council (2027–2028). He stressed the urgent need for dialogue amid ongoing conflicts, from Gaza and Ukraine to other regions in turmoil.

Strengthening Pakistan-Portugal Ties

The event celebrated the 20,000-strong Pakistani community in Portugal, which Ambassador Silva described as a “living bridge” between the two nations. He praised their contributions as entrepreneurs, professionals, and students while expressing optimism about expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, renewable energy, tourism, education, and textiles.

A Symbolic Gesture for 75 Years of Friendship

In a special tribute to the diplomatic milestone, guests received a custom key ring designed by Pakistani artist Muaaz Khan. Made from recycled soda cans, the souvenir symbolized sustainability, creativity, and a shared vision for a greener future.

Dignitaries Grace the Occasion

The reception was attended by Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister for Education Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui as chief guests. Ambassador Silva extended gratitude to partners and organizers who made the event possible.

The evening concluded with a message of friendship, gratitude, and hope for deeper collaboration between Portugal and Pakistan in the years ahead.
