- Foreign Minister of Myanmar Calls on Prime Minister, Discusses Enhanced Cooperation in Trade, Security, and Regional Engagement
ISLAMABAD – In a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at reinforcing historical ties, His Excellency U Than Swe, the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, paid a courtesy call on Pakistan’s Prime Minister this morning. The meeting, held as part of the Foreign Minister’s ongoing official visit to Pakistan, focused on charting a future course for a more robust and multidimensional partnership.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif warmly welcomed the visiting dignitary, reaffirming Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship with Myanmar. The Prime Minister emphasized the significant potential for mutual growth and proposed a concrete roadmap for collaboration.
“The foundations of our relationship are strong, but the architecture for the future must be even stronger,” the Prime Minister was quoted as stating during the meeting. He underscored the critical importance of expanding bilateral cooperation across several key pillars, including enhanced trade and economic engagement, educational exchanges, cultural partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives. A special focus was placed on fostering greater people-to-people connections to build lasting goodwill between the two nations.
In a notable acknowledgment of Myanmar’s role as a regional partner, the Prime Minister specifically appreciated Naypyidaw’s cooperative efforts in combating transnational trafficking and its consistent support for Pakistan’s enhanced engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In response, Foreign Minister U Than Swe extended sincere gratitude for the gracious hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He conveyed the cordial greetings and best wishes from Myanmar’s leadership, expressing a shared desire from Naypyidaw to broaden and deepen ties with Pakistan in areas of mutual interest.
Demonstrating the reciprocal nature of the relationship, the Myanmar Foreign Minister also took the opportunity to thank the Government and people of Pakistan for their swift and substantive humanitarian support following the catastrophic earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. He characterized this assistance as a true reflection of solidarity between the two nations.
The high-level talks were attended by key Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Tariq Fatemi, underscoring the importance Islamabad attaches to its relationship with Myanmar.
The discussions are expected to pave the way for intensified diplomatic and economic dialogue, with both sides agreeing to work through existing institutional mechanisms to translate the shared vision into tangible outcomes for the benefit of their peoples.
