Pakistan Welcomes UN Decision to Remove Country from Children in Armed Conflict Report
Islamabad – Pakistan has welcomed the decision by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to exclude the country from the Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict, calling it a diplomatic achievement and a recognition of its efforts to protect children’s rights.
The move comes after months of constructive engagement between Pakistani authorities and the UN, including close coordination with the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (SRSG-CAAC).
In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the decision reflects international acknowledgment of the country’s robust legal, policy, and institutional measures to safeguard children affected by conflict. Islamabad highlighted its efforts to align domestic laws with global standards, ensuring stronger protections for minors in vulnerable situations.
“This outcome underscores Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to upholding children’s rights and its proactive role in collaborating with the UN,” the statement read. “We remain dedicated to further strengthening these frameworks to secure a safer future for our children.”
The delisting marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Pakistan, which had previously faced scrutiny over allegations of children’s rights violations in conflict zones. The government has consistently denied such claims, citing its national action plans and rehabilitation programs for affected youth.
Pakistan also reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with the UN to advance child protection initiatives globally. Analysts say the decision could bolster Islamabad’s standing on human rights issues while encouraging further domestic reforms.
The UN’s annual report monitors violations against children in war zones, including recruitment, abduction, and attacks on schools. Pakistan’s removal signals a positive assessment of its compliance with international safeguards.
