
Islamabad, November 3: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik met today with His Excellency Mr. Tarik Ali Khan, the newly appointed High Commissioner of Canada to Pakistan, at the Ministry of Petroleum.
Welcoming the High Commissioner, Minister Malik extended his best wishes on his appointment and assured him of the Government of Pakistan’s full support in further strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan conveyed that the Government of Canada is keen to diversify its trade partnerships, identifying Asia as a region of significant potential. “We see Asia as a market full of opportunities,” he said, highlighting critical minerals, energy, renewables, and agriculture as key sectors for expanded cooperation between Pakistan and Canada.
He particularly noted the contribution of Barrick Gold Corporation—a leading Canadian company developing Pakistan’s landmark Reko Diq project—emphasizing its importance for Pakistan’s economic growth. “We look forward to Reko Diq’s success and for Pakistan and the people of Balochistan to reap its immense benefits,” he stated.
Minister Malik reaffirmed the strategic significance of the Reko Diq project, describing it as “a vehicle that will set new standards and elevate Pakistan’s entire mining sector.” He added that multiple additional projects are being planned in the adjoining areas, presenting promising opportunities for investment and collaboration.
To further strengthen bilateral engagement, the Minister extended a formal invitation to a Canadian delegation to participate in the next Pakistan Minerals Forum in 2026. He underscored Pakistan’s readiness to welcome Canadian companies for joint ventures, particularly in mineral exploration and the energy sector.
Minister Malik reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for foreign investment and fostering durable economic ties with Canada based on mutual growth and prosperity.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared resolve to deepen Pakistan–Canada cooperation, with a special focus on trade, investment, and energy partnerships.
