Historic Milestone in Central-South Asia Connectivity : Uzbekistan Launches Direct Tashkent-Islamabad Flight
Islamabad – In a landmark moment for regional connectivity, Uzbekistan Airways inaugurated its first-ever direct flight between Tashkent and Islamabad on June 14, 2025, marking a transformative step in bilateral relations. The new route, operated by a state-of-the-art Airbus A320 NEO, promises to unlock opportunities in trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Uzbekistan and Pakistan.
A Warm Welcome in Islamabad

The inaugural flight (HY-721) touched down at Islamabad International Airport at 11:50 AM local time, carrying 168 passengers. It was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute—a tradition symbolizing honor and new beginnings. The return flight to Tashkent saw similar enthusiasm, with nearly full occupancy, reflecting strong demand for the route.
High-Profile Ceremony and Diplomatic Optimism
The arrival ceremony drew dignitaries from both nations, including:

- Senior officials from Pakistan’s Ministry of Aviation and Islamabad Capital Territory Administration;
- Diplomats from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan;
- Tourism leaders, including PTDC Director General Aftab ur-Rehman Rana;
- Business representatives and over 20 tour operators.
At a press conference organized by the Embassy of Uzbekistan, speakers hailed the flight as a catalyst for deeper ties:
- Mr. Aftab ur-Rehman Rana (PTDC): “This is the third direct flight launched under President Mirziyoyev’s initiative in just six months. It will accelerate tourism, ease travel for families and entrepreneurs, and fortify our people-to-people bonds.”
- Mr. Saeed Aftab Gilani (Islamabad Airport Director): “We foresee expanded trade and academic collaboration. Discussions are underway to connect more cities, like Karachi and Tashkent.”
From Zero to Three Flights: Rapid Progress
Six months ago, no direct flights linked Uzbekistan and Pakistan. Today, the nations enjoy three weekly flights (one to Islamabad, two to Lahore)—a testament to shared commitment under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s open-door policy and Pakistan’s strategic partnership.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The flight embodies more than convenience; it bridges Central and South Asia, reinforcing historical Silk Road ties. Both nations emphasized ambitions to:
- Boost halal tourism and pilgrimage travel;
- Enhance agricultural and textile trade;
- Foster student exchanges and joint research initiatives.
A Message of Brotherhood
As passengers disembarked, Uzbek and Pakistani flags fluttered side by side—a visual metaphor for the growing partnership. “This route isn’t just about distance covered,” remarked a Uzbek diplomat. “It’s about trust, and the stories of friendship that will unfold at 30,000 feet.”

With plans to expand air links and economic cooperation, the Tashkent-Islamabad flight stands as a soaring symbol of peace, progress, and regional unity.
