Rabat, Morocco – The Republic of Malawi has firmly reiterated its steadfast position in support of the Kingdom of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including its Southern Provinces.
The affirmation was delivered on Friday by Malawi’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. George Thapatula Chaponda, during a high-level telephone conversation with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.

In a significant endorsement of Morocco’s diplomatic initiatives, Minister Chaponda commended the “growing international consensus” and the strategic momentum generated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in favor of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan. He explicitly reaffirmed Malawi’s support for this initiative, describing it as “the only credible and realistic solution” for the definitive resolution of the regional dispute. The Malawian diplomat further praised the ongoing efforts under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
Building on this solid diplomatic foundation, the two ministers expressed a shared determination to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic level. They agreed to leverage established diplomatic mechanisms, notably the Consulate General of the Republic of Malawi in Laâyoune—which became operational in December 2023—to deepen multisectoral cooperation. This enhanced partnership is designed to align with the shared vision and aspirations of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
The officials also hailed the positive trajectory of bilateral relations since 2017, highlighting significant progress in key sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, mining, trade, and public finance. They underscored the profound respect and strong bonds of friendship and solidarity that characterize the relationship between the two nations and their leaders.
A Forward-Looking Roadmap for Cooperation
Concluding the discussion, which followed Dr. Chaponda’s recent appointment, both ministers expressed profound satisfaction with the quality of the privileged relations between Morocco and Malawi. To cement this positive momentum, they announced the upcoming signing of a new Cooperation Roadmap. This strategic instrument is intended to further invigorate the bilateral partnership and enhance coordination and mutual support within regional and international forums.
This consistent and vocal support from Malawi underscores the increasing international recognition of Morocco’s legitimate rights and the realism of its Autonomy Initiative.
