ISLAMABAD: The Government of Japan has awarded eleven outstanding Pakistani students the highly prestigious MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Research Scholarships for the 2026 academic year, reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration with Pakistan.

In addition to the scholarships facilitated through the Embassy, a significant number of Pakistani students continue to secure MEXT scholarships each year through direct applications to Japanese universities. These scholarships will enable recipients to pursue Master’s and Doctoral degrees at leading institutions across Japan, contributing to advanced research, innovation, and stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Hosts Ceremony to Celebrate Academic Excellence

His Excellency Akamatsu Shuichi, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, hosted a reception at his official residence to honor members of the MEXT Alumni Association of Pakistan (MAAP) and formally bid farewell to the newly selected scholarship recipients.

In his address, Ambassador Akamatsu congratulated the scholars on their exceptional achievements and extended his best wishes for their academic journey in Japan. He emphasized Japan’s longstanding commitment to education and human resource development, noting that the MEXT program has welcomed generations of talented Pakistani students over the decades.

“As you prepare to embark on this important journey, I encourage you to remain curious, open-minded, and courageous. Learning extends beyond classrooms—embrace the culture, experiences, and daily life in Japan,” the Ambassador advised.

Expo 2025 and High-Level Engagements Boost Bilateral Relations

Reflecting on recent developments in bilateral relations, Ambassador Akamatsu highlighted the success of the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, where the Pakistan Pavilion attracted widespread attention and enhanced Japan’s public engagement with Pakistan, particularly among younger generations.

He also noted that visits by senior Pakistani officials—including Jam Kamal Khan, Maryam Nawaz, and Haroon Akhtar Khan—played a pivotal role in revitalizing diplomatic and economic ties during the Expo period.

Three Pillars Guiding Future Japan–Pakistan Cooperation

Outlining his vision for the future, Ambassador Akamatsu identified three key pillars shaping Japan–Pakistan relations:

  • Enhanced people-to-people exchanges to deepen mutual understanding
  • Strengthened economic cooperation and trade relations
  • Promotion of Japanese culture and cuisine in Pakistan

He further remarked that one of the most striking aspects of his tenure in Pakistan has been the deep-rooted trust and goodwill that Pakistani people hold for Japan. This, he said, is the result of over seven decades of diplomatic relations, Japan’s development assistance, the presence of Japanese companies, and the strong reputation of Japanese products.

Growing Interest Among Pakistani Youth

The Ambassador also underscored the increasing interest among Pakistani youth in Japan, particularly in learning the Japanese language and pursuing higher education opportunities. He noted a significant rise in the number of students enrolling in Japanese language programs, reflecting a broader enthusiasm for academic and cultural engagement.

The MEXT scholarship program continues to serve as a vital bridge between the two nations, empowering young scholars while reinforcing the enduring partnership between Japan and Pakistan.
