ISLAMABAD, Dec. 12 — A military court has sentenced former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. Gen. (retd.) Faiz Hameed to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment on multiple charges, including engaging in political activities and violating state secrets, the military’s media wing announced on Thursday.

In a formal statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) proceedings against Hameed were initiated on August 12, 2024, under the Pakistan Army Act. The trial lasted over 15 months and concluded this week.

Hameed faced four charges: engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act “detrimental to the safety and interest of the state,” misuse of authority and government resources, and causing wrongful loss to individuals. The military court found him guilty on all counts after what the ISPR described as “lengthy and laborious legal proceedings.”

The sentence was promulgated on December 11, 2025. The ISPR stressed that due legal process was followed, stating that Hameed was “afforded all legal rights, including the right to a defence team of his choice.” He retains the right to appeal under Section 133B of the Army Act, which allows convicts sentenced to more than three months of imprisonment to appeal to a military appellate court within 40 days.

The ISPR also noted that separate proceedings are ongoing regarding Hameed’s alleged involvement in “fomenting vested political agitation and instability in cohorts with political elements.”

Background and Broader Investigation

Hameed was taken into custody in August 2024 following allegations of misconduct, including a case involving a private housing society. His trial marked a significant departure from the traditional perception of untouchability surrounding senior intelligence officials in Pakistan.

In December 2024, a military court formally indicted him on three initial charges. At the time, the ISPR indicated that investigations were also examining his alleged role in events leading to the violent protests of May 9, 2023—which saw attacks on military installations following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Official Reactions

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar hailed the verdict as “historic” and a “victory of truth and justice.” In a statement, he asserted that the conviction was evidence-based and demonstrated that “no one is above the law.”

“Today, the person who crossed the red line has been punished,” Tarar said, alleging that Hameed had acted as a “political adviser” to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party after his retirement, in violation of military regulations. He confirmed that further investigations into Hameed’s political activities are underway.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, reacting on social media platform X, suggested the nation would “reap the harvest of seeds sown by Faiz Hameed sahib and [former army chief] Bajwa for years.”

The sentencing brings to a close a closely watched military trial, underscoring the army’s public commitment to internal accountability, even at its highest and most sensitive levels.
