- The milestone is part of a growing partnership between Somalia and Turkey
HARARE – Somalia is preparing to launch its first-ever satellite from its own territory, according to a report by the Somali Guardian, citing Turkish Ambassador to Mogadishu, Alper Aktas. The satellite, owned by a Turkish entity, marks a major milestone in the expanding cooperation between Somalia and Turkey.
As part of this deepening partnership, the two countries are working on the construction of a spaceport and pursuing other advanced technology initiatives aimed at boosting Somalia’s development.
Ambassador Aktas also announced that Turkish energy companies are set to begin oil production in Somalia’s offshore waters. This follows successful seismic surveys and test drilling operations conducted in recent months.
Turkey has significantly increased its involvement in Somalia over the past few years. In addition to major infrastructure investments and humanitarian assistance, Ankara has provided military training for Somali forces and supports efforts to combat the Al-Shabaab militant group.
