Islamabad/Karachi – The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Islamabad, in partnership with the Office of the Chief Minister of Sindh, convened the Ethio-Pakistan Green Legacy Dialogue on Saturday to foster collaboration in tackling climate change, land degradation, and deforestation.

The high-level forum was co-chaired by H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary of Ethiopia, and H.E. Syed Murad Ali Shah, Honorable Chief Minister of Sindh.

Representing Ethiopia, Dr. Adefires Worku Gizaw, Chair of the Green Legacy Technical Committee, presented Ethiopia’s ambitious roadmap under the Green Legacy Initiative of Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, which focuses on large-scale afforestation, reforestation, food security, soil and water management, and youth employment opportunities.

From the Pakistan side, H.E. Zubair Ahmed, Secretary of Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the Sindh Government’s climate change policies and initiatives aligned with green growth and sustainable development.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker underscored Ethiopia’s global leadership role in advancing the climate agenda. He stressed that Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy Initiative is not only transforming Ethiopia but also inspiring nations across Africa and beyond to adopt inclusive, sustainable, and green development strategies.

He emphasized that climate change continues to pose severe challenges by undermining livelihoods and reversing development gains in vulnerable nations, and therefore international cooperation is indispensable. The Ambassador invited the Government of Sindh to send a delegation to participate in the Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa from September 8–10, 2025.

In response, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah lauded Ethiopia’s leadership and the initiative of the Embassy in Islamabad for launching the Green Legacy Dialogue. He reaffirmed Sindh’s commitment to strengthening environment and climate cooperation with Ethiopia, confirming that a delegation from Sindh will attend the upcoming Africa Climate Summit.

The Ethio-Pakistan Green Legacy Dialogue marked a new milestone in bilateral relations, paving the way for closer cooperation in environmental conservation, food security, and sustainable development between the two brotherly nations.
