Ethiopia Unveils Bold Vision with New Mega Airport in Bishoftu: A Continental Game-Changer

Ethiopia Mega-Airport in Bishoftu

Bishoftu, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian government, in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines Group, has launched an ambitious plan to construct a state-of-the-art international airport in Bishoftu town, marking a new era in Africa’s aviation and economic transformation.

Speaking at the high-profile two-day project showcase held in Bishoftu, Ethiopia’s Finance Minister Ahmed Shide described the project as a cornerstone of national infrastructure and a strategic lever for pan-African integration.

“This is more than just an airport. It is a bold vision for Africa’s connectivity, trade, tourism, and socio-economic growth,” said Minister Ahmed. “It reflects Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to shaping the future of African aviation and delivering world-class infrastructure grounded in sustainability and innovation.”

The event brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including financial institutions, contractors, investors, suppliers, and representatives of multilateral development banks. Among the key institutions present was the African Development Bank (AfDB), which has been appointed as the Initial Mandated Lead Arranger for project financing. KPMG will serve as financial advisor.

A New Global Gateway for Africa

The mega airport, strategically located just southeast of Addis Ababa in Bishoftu, is poised to become one of the largest airports in Africa. Upon completion, it will significantly ease pressure on the already bustling Bole International Airport and firmly establish Ethiopia as Africa’s premier aviation hub.

A dedicated high-speed rail line will connect Bole and Bishoftu airports, ensuring seamless transfer, enhanced operational resilience, and uninterrupted international service.

“Africa’s air passenger traffic is set to double in the next 15 years, according to IATA,” said Minister Ahmed. “This project is not only timely, it is bankable and future-proof.”

With Ethiopian Airlines at the helm — a carrier globally recognized for its efficiency and profitability — Ethiopia is uniquely positioned to capitalize on growing demand and redefine the continent’s role in global aviation.

A Pan-African Vision Backed by Results

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tasew, emphasized the airline’s readiness and strategic planning over the past two years, which included securing the land, resettling affected communities, and establishing a dedicated Project Management Office.

“From humble beginnings, Ethiopian Airlines has grown to become Africa’s largest and most profitable airline. This new airport marks the next phase of that journey — a Pan-African asset serving the continent and the world,” said Mesfin.

The project aligns seamlessly with Ethiopia’s broader infrastructure ambitions, echoing the spirit of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) — another monumental achievement driven by national vision and resolve.

Backed by Africa’s Leading Development Partners

Representing AfDB, Max Magor Ndiaye, Director of Syndication, Co-financing and Client Solutions, highlighted the bank’s long-standing partnership with Ethiopia and its strong commitment to the project.

“Investing in this global hub will bring Africa closer to the world and the world closer to Africa,” said Ndiaye. “It will accelerate trade, investment, and unlock immense spillover benefits across the continent.”

A Future-Ready Airport with Sustainability at Its Core

According to Minister Ahmed, the Bishoftu airport will be built with a clear commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible development, incorporating cutting-edge green technologies and sustainable construction practices.

“This is not just Ethiopia’s project. It is an African milestone — a symbol of what we can achieve together,” he said.

A National Project with Continental Impact

With Ethiopia once again asserting its leadership role on the African stage, the Bishoftu International Airport project signals a new chapter in Africa’s aviation revolution, with the potential to reshape the region’s connectivity, empower trade, boost tourism, and create tens of thousands of jobs.

From the GERD to the skies, Ethiopia is building a future grounded in resilience, innovation, and continental pride.
