Ethiopia and Pakistan Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Institutional Linkages

Islamabad – The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation by strengthening institutional linkages and expanding collaboration across multiple sectors.

The discussions took place during a meeting between H.E. Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the FDRE to Pakistan, and H.E. Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both sides conducted a comprehensive review of their bilateral and multilateral engagement, covering areas such as peace and security, climate change, aviation, trade, investment, science and technology, culture, and tourism.

Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker expressed deep appreciation for the growing momentum in bilateral relations, reiterating his strong commitment to work closely with the Government of Pakistan to take these relations to new heights. He emphasized the importance of institutional linkages as a key driver for enhancing cooperation and delivering mutual benefits to both nations.

He also briefed Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), underscoring its construction on the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization of shared water resources. The Ambassador further highlighted Ethiopia’s leadership role in regional integration, climate diplomacy, and resource-sharing with neighboring countries and beyond.

Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, in turn, praised Ethiopia’s constructive role in advancing regional cooperation and acknowledged its contributions to sustainable development. He underlined the importance of economic diplomacy in driving stronger relations, reiterating Pakistan’s commitment under its “Look Africa” and “Engage Africa” policies.

The Additional Secretary also briefed the Ethiopian Ambassador on preparations for the 5th Pakistan–Africa Trade Development Conference and Single Country Exhibition (PATDC & SCE), scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa from October 16–18, 2025. The event is expected to serve as a milestone in advancing trade, investment, and people-to-people ties between Pakistan, Ethiopia, and the wider African continent.

This high-level engagement underscores the shared vision of Ethiopia and Pakistan to further deepen their strategic partnership, guided by mutual respect, economic opportunity, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity.
