Islamabad – The Republic of Azerbaijan has strongly condemned drone attacks targeting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, calling the incident a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
According to Azerbaijani authorities, the attacks occurred at around midday on March 5, when drones were launched toward Nakhchivan from the territory of the Iran.
One of the drones struck the terminal building of the airport in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, causing damage to the facility. Another drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad. The incident resulted in injuries to two civilians, officials said.
Azerbaijan strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as an unacceptable act that targeted civilian infrastructure and endangered the safety of local residents.
In an official statement, Baku said the incident represents a clear violation of the norms and principles of international law and risks further escalating tensions in the region.
The Azerbaijani government has called on the authorities of Iran to provide a prompt and clear explanation regarding the incident, conduct a thorough investigation, and take urgent measures to ensure that similar attacks do not occur again.
Officials also stated that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate response measures to protect its sovereignty and security.
Following the incident, Mojtaba Demirchilou, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baku. During the meeting, Azerbaijani officials conveyed a strong protest and handed over a formal note of protest regarding the attack.
