ISLAMABAD — Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Pakistan, H.E. Damián Cordero Torres, held a press conference in Islamabad to highlight the humanitarian and economic consequences of the United States’ blockade against Cuba and urge the international community to support its removal.

Titled “The Human and Economic Cost: Why the World Must Vote to End the US Blockade against Cuba,” the press conference was held on the eve of a vote in the United Nations General Assembly concerning the long-standing US economic embargo against the Caribbean nation.

Cuban Ambassador Details Impact of Sanctions

During the press conference, Ambassador Cordero Torres outlined the damage that, according to the Cuban government, had been caused by the US blockade between March 2025 and February 2026. He highlighted the difficulties faced by Cuba’s population, particularly in the critical sectors of healthcare and energy.

The ambassador also pointed to the intensification of US sanctions following two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump in 2026. He further criticized Cuba’s inclusion on the US list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, arguing that the designation compounds the economic and humanitarian challenges facing the country.

Cuba Reaffirms Commitment to Respectful Dialogue

Ambassador Cordero Torres reiterated the Cuban government’s willingness to engage in respectful dialogue with the United States, emphasizing that such engagement must respect Cuba’s national sovereignty and independence.

He stressed the importance of resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy, while calling on the international community to demonstrate solidarity with the Cuban people. Appeal for International Support at the United Nations

As the United Nations General Assembly prepared to vote on the issue, the Cuban ambassador urged the international community to support efforts to end the blockade, highlighting its reported consequences for Cuba’s economy, public services and everyday life.

The press conference underscored Cuba’s continued diplomatic efforts to secure international support for lifting the restrictions and to promote dialogue based on mutual respect, sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
