- State Department Reports Sharp Increase in Visa Cancellations as Washington Tightens Immigration Enforcement
WASHINGTON: The administration of US President Donald Trump has revoked more than 300,000 visas since the beginning of his second term, the State Department announced on Tuesday, highlighting the accelerating pace of the government’s sweeping immigration enforcement campaign.
The latest figure represents a substantial increase from the more than 175,000 visa revocations reported by the State Department in an update issued on August 10. Trump returned to office in January 2025, pledging tougher measures against illegal immigration and stronger enforcement of US immigration laws.
State Department Defends Accelerated Visa Revocations
Announcing the latest figures on X, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the administration had revoked visas at a faster pace than any previous administration.
Pigott reiterated the government’s position that foreign nationals visiting or residing in the United States on visas would face strict enforcement measures if found to have violated the law, committed fraud or posed national security concerns.
The administration maintains that its immigration crackdown and deportation drive are intended to strengthen domestic security and ensure compliance with US immigration laws.
Rights Groups Raise Concerns Over Due Process and Free Speech
The intensified enforcement campaign has drawn criticism from civil liberties advocates and human rights organisations, which argue that some government actions have undermined due process protections and freedom of expression.
Critics have also warned that the measures could create an increasingly hostile environment for immigrant communities, particularly ethnic minorities who have expressed concerns about racial profiling and discriminatory enforcement.
Among the most controversial cases are visa revocations involving foreign nationals who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Rights advocates have also criticised actions against foreign nationals over social media comments concerning the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Social Media Screening and Immigration Restrictions Expanded
Alongside visa cancellations and deportation efforts, the Trump administration has intensified scrutiny of social media activity among immigrants and visa applicants.
Rights advocates contend that national security considerations have, in some cases, been used to target individuals critical of government policies. They have also raised concerns that allegations of fraud involving particular individuals could lead to broader scrutiny of immigrant communities, including Somali Americans in Minnesota.
The administration, however, maintains that its measures are necessary to enforce immigration rules and protect national security.
Legal Immigration Also Faces Increased Barriers
Although Trump campaigned in 2024 on a pledge to curb illegal immigration, his administration has also introduced measures that make certain forms of legal immigration more difficult.
These include higher fees for some employment-based visas, adding to concerns among businesses, foreign workers and immigration advocates about the broader impact of the administration’s policies.
The latest visa revocation figures underscore the scale of the administration’s immigration enforcement campaign, while the debate continues over how to balance national security and immigration law enforcement with due process, civil liberties and the rights of foreign nationals.
