- Diplomats, business leaders, media representatives and civil society unite in Islamabad tree-planting campaign supporting Ethiopia’s goal of planting 800 million seedlings in a single day
Islamabad – Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to global environmental sustainability by joining the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in its historic single-day tree-planting campaign under the Green Legacy Initiative, spearheaded by Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
The plantation drive, organized by the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), brought together participants from diverse sectors, including members of the diplomatic corps, business community, media, academia and civil society.
The event was held in solidarity with Ethiopia’s ambitious national target of planting 800 million tree seedlings in a single day, underscoring the shared commitment of Pakistan and Ethiopia to combating climate change and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
Ethiopia Showcases Global Leadership in Climate Action
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Melaw Getachew, Chargé d’Affaires of the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad, highlighted the remarkable achievements of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, describing it as one of the world’s most successful environmental restoration programs.
He informed participants that Ethiopia has already planted more than 48 billion seedlings since the launch of the initiative, significantly contributing to reforestation, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
“The purpose of today’s plantation drive is to stand alongside our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia as they pursue their historic goal of planting 800 million seedlings in a single day,” Mr. Getachew said.
He also emphasized Ethiopia’s growing international leadership in climate action, noting that Addis Ababa will host the COP32 Climate Summit, further reinforcing the country’s commitment to advancing global environmental sustainability.
Pakistani Leaders Praise Ethiopia’s Green Vision
Chairman of the Clean and Green Movement Islamabad and former President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Zafar Bakhtawari, lauded Ethiopia’s extraordinary reforestation campaign, calling it an inspiring model for environmental stewardship.
He said Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative closely aligns with the objectives of Pakistan’s own Clean and Green Movement, emphasizing that collective international efforts are essential to effectively address the growing challenges posed by climate change.
Mr. Bakhtawari stressed that initiatives promoting afforestation, environmental conservation and sustainable development strengthen global cooperation and inspire communities worldwide to protect the planet for future generations.
Strengthening Pakistan–Ethiopia Environmental Partnership
The plantation campaign reflected the growing partnership between Pakistan and Ethiopia in advancing environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting global initiatives aimed at expanding green cover, preserving natural ecosystems and fostering a more sustainable future through international collaboration.
