DUBAI: A commercial tanker was struck by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Oman on Saturday, causing damage to its engine room, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), as tensions continue to escalate between the United States and Iran over control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The UKMTO said the incident occurred approximately 12.5 nautical miles off the coast of Lima, Oman. The vessel reported that the projectile damaged its engine room, but no injuries were reported among the crew.
The British maritime agency did not identify the source of the projectile or provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
The incident comes amid heightened military and geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route for oil and gas exports. The latest attack is expected to raise further concerns over maritime security and the safety of commercial vessels operating in the area.
