- Joint Commission in Cotonou Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation and Endorses Morocco’s Territorial Integrity
COTONOU: The Republic of Benin has reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over all of its territory, including the Sahara region, while reiterating its endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the 7th Session of the Morocco–Benin Joint Cooperation Commission, held in Cotonou. The meeting was co-chaired by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for the Integration of People of African Descent, Corinne Amori Brunet.
Benin Endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative
During the session, Benin reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the sole credible and realistic basis for achieving a peaceful, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution to the Sahara issue.
Minister Corinne Amori Brunet also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that it reinforces international efforts aimed at reaching a political solution based on the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative under Morocco’s sovereignty.
Beninese Foreign Minister to Visit Dakhla
As part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation, Minister Amori Brunet announced that she will undertake an official mission to the Moroccan city of Dakhla in the near future.
The visit is expected to focus on assessing the region’s economic and social development, while exploring opportunities for investment, economic cooperation, and institutional partnerships.
Next Joint Commission to Be Held in Dakhla
The two countries also agreed to convene the 8th Session of the Morocco–Benin Joint Cooperation Commission in the city of Dakhla, reflecting the growing momentum in bilateral relations and Benin’s continued support for Morocco’s development initiatives in its southern provinces.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Morocco and Benin to strengthening political dialogue, expanding economic cooperation, and advancing their strategic partnership across a wide range of sectors.
