Morocco defeats Canada in World Cup
  • Atlas Lions overcome spirited Canadian challenge to secure a 3-0 victory and inspire millions with another landmark achievement on the global stage

ISLAMABAD: Morocco produced another historic moment at the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals on two occasions after a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada, further cementing the Atlas Lions’ status among the world’s elite football teams.

While the final scoreline reflected Moroccan superiority, the contest proved far more challenging than many supporters had anticipated, with Canada displaying determination and resilience before Morocco’s quality ultimately prevailed.

The achievement sparked celebrations among Moroccan fans worldwide, as midfielder Azzedine Ounahi admitted he was overwhelmed with emotion after helping his nation create yet another unforgettable chapter in its football history.

“Sometimes I feel like crying when I see the celebrations—the elderly, young people, children and families all united behind the team,” Ounahi said. “We know how important football is to the Moroccan people, and our goal is to make them proud.”

Resilience Defines the Atlas Lions

Entering the match as one of the tournament favourites and ranked significantly above their North American opponents, Morocco carried the expectations of millions who believed a comfortable victory was within reach.

However, Canada demonstrated impressive energy and attacking intent during the opening half, creating several opportunities and testing the resolve of the African champions.

Despite the early pressure, Morocco remained composed and showcased the mentality that has become the hallmark of this golden generation.

“These days, there are no easy teams anymore,” Ounahi said. “People may think some matches are straightforward, but every team fights with determination. In the second half, we stayed calm, found the right solutions, and, alhamdulillah, we performed much better.”

Ounahi Leads Morocco’s Charge

The turning point came shortly after the interval when Ounahi struck brilliantly from distance, shifting momentum decisively in Morocco’s favour.

The midfielder later added his second goal before Sofiane Rahimi completed the scoring in added time, sealing an emphatic victory and sending Moroccan supporters into jubilant celebrations.

Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz, who provided two assists in the match, praised his teammates’ resilience and winning mentality.

“The World Cup is the most difficult stage in football,” Diaz said. “What makes this team special is our mentality. We knew the first half was not our best, but we came back determined to give everything. In football and in life, the most important thing is to keep your head high and continue fighting. I am incredibly proud of this team.”

A United Generation Chasing Greatness

Although Ounahi earned Man of the Match honours, the Girona midfielder emphasized that Morocco’s success is built on collective spirit rather than individual brilliance.

“I’m proud of everyone in this group,” he said. “It’s not about who scores; we all share the same objective and fight for the same dream. This generation has something special, and we are united in our desire to achieve greatness for our country.”

The passionate Moroccan supporters, dressed in traditional fezzes and waving the national flag, created an electrifying atmosphere throughout the match, demonstrating the unwavering bond between the team and its people.

Pride for Africa, Hope for the Future

Morocco’s latest achievement represents another milestone not only for the Kingdom but also for African football as a whole, reinforcing the continent’s growing influence on the world stage.

The Atlas Lions now prepare for a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown against France, carrying the hopes of millions of Moroccans and football fans across Africa and the Arab world.

Their remarkable journey continues to inspire a new generation, proving that unity, determination, and belief can elevate a nation to historic heights on the biggest stage in world football.
