- Investigators Probe Possible Migrant Rivalry After Victims Found Dead Inside Burned Minivan in Southern Italy
ROME: Italian authorities have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the deaths of four Pakistani farm workers whose bodies were discovered inside a burned-out minivan in southern Italy, according to a report published by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Tuesday.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in an investigation that has shocked migrant communities in the southern region of Calabria, where thousands of foreign laborers are employed in the agricultural sector.
Victims Found Inside Charred Vehicle
The tragedy came to light when emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle fire at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara, a rural farming area known for its extensive agricultural activity.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and made the grim discovery of four bodies inside the severely damaged minivan. The victims were later identified as Pakistani farm workers employed in the region.
Authorities immediately launched a homicide investigation amid suspicions that the fire had been deliberately set.
Surveillance Footage Key to Investigation
According to Corriere della Sera, investigators obtained surveillance camera footage from the petrol station that provided crucial evidence in the case.
The CCTV recordings allegedly show two individuals approaching the vehicle, blocking its doors from the outside, and pouring a liquid substance into the minivan before setting it alight.
The footage reportedly captures flames rapidly engulfing the vehicle as the suspects flee the scene.
Law enforcement officials believe the evidence strongly supports the theory that the victims were intentionally trapped inside the van before the fire was started.
Police Treat Case as Deliberate Murder
Local police chief Antonio Borelli described the incident as a clear case of homicide.
“This is definitely murder; we just have to work out the details,” Borelli was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Investigators are now working to establish the exact sequence of events, determine the motive behind the killings, and identify whether additional suspects may have been involved.
Growing Tensions Among Migrant Workers
The report suggests that the killings may have occurred against a backdrop of escalating tensions within migrant communities working in Calabria’s agricultural sector.
According to local authorities and media reports, the region has witnessed at least 14 incidents of arson involving cars and minivans used by Pakistani workers in recent months.
Investigators are examining whether disputes over access to farm work, residency permits, accommodation, and other economic pressures may have contributed to the violence.
Calabria relies heavily on migrant labor for seasonal agricultural production, but labor organizations have long warned of difficult living conditions, competition for employment opportunities, and social tensions among vulnerable worker communities.
Investigation Continues
Italian prosecutors and police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deaths and whether the attack was linked to organized criminal activity, personal disputes, or broader conflicts within the migrant workforce.
The case has drawn attention both in Italy and Pakistan, with community leaders calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
As authorities gather additional evidence, the deaths of the four farm workers have reignited concerns about the safety and welfare of migrant laborers working in some of Italy’s most important agricultural regions.
