RABAT – The solidity of Morocco’s political model and its deepening strategic partnership with Europe took center stage today as Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, held official talks in Rabat with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
During the visit, Finland delivered a strong endorsement of Morocco’s domestic trajectory, specifically praising the country’s political stability and ambitious reform agenda. In a joint statement following the talks, the Nordic nation acknowledged that under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, these reforms are instrumental in positioning Morocco as a reliable and essential partner for the European Union.

Minister Valtonen expressed her full support for the renewed trajectory of bilateral relations and her willingness to actively contribute to strengthening this strategic partnership.
Strong Stance on Territorial Integrity
In a significant diplomatic development, Finland reinforced its position on the Western Sahara dispute, describing “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” as one of the most feasible solutions. Helsinki affirmed that this approach constitutes a serious and credible basis for reaching a definitive and mutually acceptable resolution.
This latest statement builds on Finland’s historic shift in August 2024, when it became the first Nordic country to formally endorse Morocco’s Autonomy Plan. During today’s talks, Finland also reiterated its backing of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and voiced strong support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to achieve a just and lasting political solution.
A Shared Commitment to Euro-Mediterranean Partnership
The discussions also underscored the strong institutional framework linking Rabat to Europe. Both ministers highlighted the positive outcomes of the fifteenth session of the EU-Morocco Association Council, held in Brussels on January 29. Furthermore, they recalled the shared commitment to the Pact for the Mediterranean, launched in Barcelona in November 2025, which renews ties between the EU and its southern partners based on mutual trust and shared responsibility.
For its part, Morocco reaffirmed the importance it places on its “long-standing, close, multidimensional, and privileged” partnership with the European Union. The joint statement specifically emphasized Morocco’s vital role as a trusted partner in the EU’s southern neighborhood, dedicated to fostering regional stability and shared prosperity.
Deepening Economic and Strategic Ties
Beyond political dialogue, Finland and Morocco are focused on bolstering economic ties, particularly in trade and investment. Celebrating 66 years of diplomatic relations, the partnership continues to evolve, with Finland viewing Morocco as a strategic gateway to African and Mediterranean markets. This bilateral momentum is framed within a broader economic context where EU-Morocco trade has surged past €60 billion, supported by approximately €270 million in annual EU allocations to Morocco.
